“Translate. Transfer. Transform.” – Focus on translating
International Translation Centre with its own stage / Events exploring the importance of translators and feminist literature
Without them there would be no international bestsellers and understanding each other across national borders would be much more difficult, yet only rarely do they step into the spotlight: translators are essential, and not only in the world of literature. In 2022, Frankfurter Buchmesse is therefore using “Translate. Transfer. Transform” to put a spotlight on translating – and not just literary translations, but also translation as a communicative act. The new International Translation Centre in Hall 4.0 (G 101 and G 114) will be the main venue for exploring the topic at the book fair. Jointly organised by VdÜ, Germany’s association of German-language translators, and Frankfurter Buchmesse, the 160-square-metre centre will feature its own stage and a networking space. This is where translators can come together with publishers, authors, scouts and agents. The centre’s other partners include European literary organisations such as Czech Lit, ENLIT, FILI, Goethe-Institut, Litprom e.V., the Slovenian Book Agency, Weltlesebühne e.V. and many others.
The stage (Hall 4.0 G 114) will offer a multifaceted programme on all five days of the fair. In addition to translations of comics, non-fiction, and books for children and young adults, the programme’s topics will include the role of translators in the world of literature and translations of feminist texts. The current Guest of Honour, Spain, and the Guest of Honour at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2023, Slovenia, will be organising events, as will former Guest of Honour countries Finland, Georgia and Norway. The Czech Republic, France, Japan, the Philippines, Italy and Greece will also be participating in the programme.
The entire programme can be accessed at www.buchmesse.de/en/visit/calendar-events(opens in a new window) and at www.buchmesse.de/en/highlights/professional-programme/translation-centre(opens in a new window). The listed events will take place on the stage in the International Translation Centre: Halle 4.0 G 114.
