In the Name of Georgian Literature
Unfolding the legacy and present of Georgian literature in conversation with award-winning authors. The organizers of the event are Intelekti Publishing, Sulakauri Publishing and Goethe-Institut Georgien.
Georgian literature has historically been a part of European culture: from the 5th-century first Christian texts to the Renaissance of the Middle Ages, to the 20th-century symbolism and realism, to modernism and postmodernism. Contemporary Georgian fiction varies in genre, form, thematic focus, and other aspects. There is a growing trend for historical fiction or sagas reflecting on Georgia’s colonized past, Soviet regime, and occupation. Processing and storytelling of pivotal historical events are crucial for the society to advance, grow and define its identity – “ Georgian, therefore European”. Lasha Bugadze and Iva Pezuashvili have masterfully told about generational trauma and social issues in their fiction. They discuss their novels in conversation with Barbara Lehnerer, as well as key trends and points of contemporary Georgian literature and the state of Georgian culture today.
