Japanese is the second most frequently translated language into German in 2021. Mangas in particular are export hits, but authors such as Sayaka Murata and Mieko Kawakami are also causing a stir internationally in the field of fiction. In contrast, virtually no literature from the Philippines reaches the German market, although a lot is written and published in English there. Why is that? And what about the other 170 languages of the archipelago, for example the important Tagalog?
