A conversation with Lai to examine the suppressed memories of post-war Taiwan through literature.

“The White Terror, a program of political persecution conducted under the aegis of martial law, reigns over post-war Taiwan. Yet, somehow, everyday life continues for three ordinary citizens in this subtle portrayal of a society struggling under the dark clouds of mutual suspicion, surveillance, and coercive control.”

In her novel \"Portraits in White,\" Hsiang-Yin Lai depicts stories from Taiwan’s White Terror period, bringing the lives of Taiwanese people during that time to readers through fiction. In this literary event, Lai will share the memories and stories that took place in Taiwan and continue to resonate today.

Portraits in White is the winner of the Annual Golden Grand Laurel Award at the 2022 Taiwan Literature Awards, organized by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. It is an indicative literary award in Taiwan that emphasizes the artistry and creativity of Taiwanese literature.

For this event, people with hearing aids or cochlear implants can borrow portable induction loops that connect to the translation system receivers. Translation will be provided into English. The induction slings are available at the particular stage without prior registration.
