Translate dark Spanish poetry

Speakers:

  • Achim Geisenhanslüke (Literary scholar)
  • Marília Jöhnk (Literary scholar)
  • Susanne Lange (Translatpr)
  • Martin von Koppenfels (Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, Professor of General and Comparative Literature)

In the summer of 2022, the long-awaited four-volume anthology on Spanish and Hispano-American poetry was published by C.H. Beck.
Two of the editors, Martin von Koppenfels and Susanne Lange, talk with the two Frankfurt literary scholars Achim Geisenhanslüke and Marília Jöhnk about the "steps astray" on this long trek from language to language and from epoch to epoch. Both the overall concept and, on the basis of individual poems, concrete translation issues will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on questions of translating 'dark' or 'difficult' texts, of which this lyrical culture, shaped by Baroque traditions, is particularly rich.

The event is a cooperation with the Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Goethe University Frankfurt. It is part of the series of talks "Translating World Poetry. Theory and Practice", sponsored by the German Translator's Fund.
